Mere joy or happiness

This photograph by Dr Guillaume Duchenne – after whom the ‘Duchenne smile’ is named – was used by Charles Darwin as an example in his book about expression. Darwin said that such smiling – which can graduate into laughter – was the natural expression of ‘mere joy or happiness’. You can read Darwin’s whole book for yourself online.
