Rapture

‘Ravissement’ which could be translated ‘rapture’ or ‘ecstasy’, is the subject of this etching by B. Picart, 1713, after an image by made by Charles Le Brun, ‘First Painter’ to King Louis XIV of France. Rapture, like awe, wonder, ecstasy, and love, was an important passion for thinkers in earlier centuries, but not one that often comes to mind when psychologists are discussing human emotions today. You can read more about some varieties of rapture on the Emotions Lab “ecstasy” page.
